All are loosely linked by a Native American heritage, which gives them access, and the desire to understand their own nature. The first novella, THE TRAIL OF THE MOUNTAIN GOD is based on an actual event occurring when the now popular Olympic sport of Freestyle skiing was evolving. The young native American hero Timothy Allen Walden is faced with a clash between two cultures which challenges him to synthesize an entire new concept of self. It is the story of Tim’s desire to be an international champion and his duty at home with his aging grandparents. Tim and his companion, the wolf dog Buddy, ski the trail of the mountain god to an important life discovery. THE NIGHT THE RAINBOW TOUCHED THE EARTH deals with the adventures of a young pilot during World War II who tries to return to duty from a much deserved leave. Grayson Jeeter, flying a B-25 is forced to crash land his plane into the mountains of the southwest. His world of wartime violence is suddenly suspended and he is temporarily able to turn inward. Jeeter flourishes in isolation and rediscovers some of life’s imperatives and, more importantly, he finds love. A young anthropology graduate student stumbles into his camp and reveals secrets best left unknown. Jeeter’s lost love reincarnates, like the old Phoenix myth, in a forgotten canyon sacred to an ancient people. The third piece, THE BADGE, is a true story of an actual act of unspeakable violence occurring in California in the 1920’s. It is based on the apprehension of one of the first, if not the first, serial killers in the state, Gordon Northcott. The hero of THE BADGE is Sheriff Jack Brown. Some parts have been fictionalized for obvious reasons but essentially the events are true. The story begins with the initial reports of several missing boys in San Bernardino County. Brown, an Indian trained tracker, was hired to search. Brown’s investigation led to Nothcott’s chicken farm in Wineville. Initial surveillance of the area uncovered evidence incriminating Northcott who then fled to Canada. Brown followed and apprehended him. He was returned to the U.S. where he was hanged October 2, 1930 in San Quentin Prison.Jack H. Brown collaborator on THE BADGE is the CEO and President of Stater Bros markets. Walter Stump taught at the University of Southern Maine for 36 years where he was named Distinguished Scholar of Performing Arts.
